Deblasio Scorned

The  mayor of New York city stood up to speak at the funeral of one of the police officer's who had been murdered and thousands of police officers turned their backs to him...just as he'd done to them in publicly condemning them as a whole.

It was a silent protest that screamed out the anger and indignation of every good and honorable police officer who dons their uniform and steps out into a dangerous world every day.  To have the leader of their city insult them publicly was almost like giving the criminals permission to kill on sight...and that's what happened.

I can't help but think what a powerful but civilized protest this was.  The insult to Deblasio was perfectly clear as honorable men and women turned their backs on someone who wasn't worthy of their attention.  All done without yelling, chanting, or gunfire.  All done while a few morons nearby chanted that they wanted to kill more cops.  All done without the decent cops at their comrade's funeral procession wiping that scum off the face of the earth.  That's what a civilized protest is!

I hope so much that all this nastiness fades away and police officers are safer on the job than they are today.  I hope no other man or woman who is only trying to keep us safe ends up losing their life to a low life piece of crap who is stupidly trying to make a name for himself.  I hope the good guy wins in the end.

I'm Back

I felt really good yesterday...still have ear blockage...and caught Sylvia as she was walking by to invite her in for tea.  I've been especially worried about exposing her to any of my cold germs because of her tender ribs from her car accident.  Coughing for her would be disastrous.

I hadn't planned on going to the clubhouse until next week but felt as though the cold was really gone so I went over for Bingo last night and won $5.  Of course, it cost me $8 but it was worth it to get out in the world again.  We have such a nice group of people here at the park and I love being among them.

Today is Saturday, one of my usual home days, but I may go over tonight to play cards...kind of catching up on the fun I've been missing.  Most of next week is already planned with lots of time with friends.  This is the last winter with Sylvia and I'm going to miss her something awful but the long distance travelling has become especially difficult for her since her accident.  My own time here is quickly growing to a close, too, but I should manage coming again next winter.  From then on, it will have to be re-evaluated every year as to whether or not it's worth the expense.

We have a meeting in the clubhouse next Saturday for residents to question the park managers as to why our lot rent went up so much and as to what the future holds for us.  Almost all of us are on fixed incomes and it's especially hard for us Canadians because of the falling Canadian dollar.  If this park is moving in the direction of a more expensive, exclusive park, then my time here is definitely coming to a close sooner than later.

Anyway, all good things come to an end one day and I've been so lucky to have had some darned good ones since buying our trailer in 2000.  Always be thankful for the good!!

Post Xmas 2014

It's the day after Christmas and there's still untold turmoil in the United States that I, personally, think is ridiculous.  Another young black man was shot and killed by police who were trying to control a potentially volatile demonstration against the previous killings.  The problem arises that this young man, and a few others, was raging toward the police and aiming a gun at him.  The officer saved his own life as he should have.

What kind of dimwit points a gun at a cop and doesn't expect to be shot down himself?  It's so darned sad that there are people that stupid out there.  They will always be a danger to the public and to themselves.  Unfortunately, the protesters used this justified killing as an excuse to riot and demonstrate again without knowing the circumstances.  It's almost as if they don't care, they just want to rage against all police using any excuse that pops up.  Is this truly a rage against the police or against life in general?

There's no question that black young men are often unfairly targeted by racist police and maybe this recent uproar will put an end to the unfairness or at least lessen it.  The shame of it all is that even the good cops are literally under fire by an unruly crowd of dissenters.  We need change and we need it fast but we also need to put an end to young men brandishing guns at the police and believing it's safe to do so.

I'm wondering how many police officers have quit their jobs or moved on to work in calmer territories.  If I were a cop, I wouldn't put my life on the line every day only to be abused and threatened as they have lately.  In the cities where the protesting has been the most violent, citizens just might find themselves not able to find a cop when they need one.

Shelley and Nicky

From the day Nicholas was born he was the precious little prince of the family, first grandchild, first boy.  Shelley was 20 years old when Nick was born (Kim & Brian's first child) and  our little Nicky adored her from the beginning.  This attraction to young women in their twenties seems to have passed down to Nick's son, Nolan, and his adoration of Cindy's daughter, Aeron!

I remember a Christmas when Nick couldn't wait to open his present from Shelley and he shook with happiness...after all, it was from his precious Shelley.  There was also the time when he was 2 years old and Shelley was sunbathing in the backyard all covered in lotion.  Nick, somehow knowing it wasn't appropriate to face her, pressed his back onto her and rubbed his little self into the lotion.

One of the sweetest, yet saddest times, was at Shelley and John's wedding.  Nick was 4 years old and the ring bearer.  Ashley, 8, was the flower girl.  The incident happened when the time came for John to remove Shelley's garter and Nick was overcome with jealousy.  Crying, he ran up to John and tried to pull him away from HIS Shelley.  Loving hands calmed him down but he cried for a quite a while.  He must have felt very lost and betrayed.  All is well today, though.  He loves both Shelley and John!

Christmas Eve, 2014

It's hard to feel Christmasy here in Florida where the sun shines warmly on the palm trees.  I think of my own children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren back in Canada and miss them a lot...but not the cold.  I won't be able to join in with my friends at the clubhouse for Xmas dinner because I'm still a germ factory but, if I were back home in Canada, I'd be relegated to my little apartment and away from my family for the same reason.  It's much nicer being segregated from the world in a warm and hospitable climate.

I remember Christmas eves of the past when our home was the place for the whole family to go.  Our little house would be filled to the rafters with family and it was one of the occasions that bonded us to each other and that bonding still holds today.  I know I blather on about how important the family bond is but it's true.  It's the strength of that bond that nourishes us in good times and heals us in bad times.

And so, on this Christmas Eve of 2014, I may be 1200 miles away from the people I love most in the world but we'll be together in spirit.

I Treated Myself

I treated myself to 3 pair of sterling silver earrings yesterday.  Kohl's had a 70% off sale on their fine jewelry and I'm down to one pair of not so nifty silver earrings so this was my chance to get some pretty ones at a good price.  I didn't intend to buy 3 pair but one pair was tri-color and one pair was $20 so that's my excuse.  Anyway, I deserved them, right?

I don't wear gold earrings anymore...and that's a good thing considering the cost of gold...but the tr-colored ones I just bought will go fine with any gold-toned costume necklaces I have.  We must present a "put together" appearance, don't you know.

As I wandered through the store looking at all the items for sale, it hit me once again how little I actually need.  I remember back in my twenties when I felt a need for many things we couldn't afford but today I really do have all I need and that's a blessing.  It's also good to understand that "need" and "want" are two very different things.

I watched a sweet family of probably 6 children with their parents and thought how expensive that Xmas bill is going to be.  It's too bad that the time we need to spend the most for Xmas is usually the time of our lives we can afford the least.

Anyway, my cold is quickly disappearing but my ear is still plugged and I do cough a bit still.  Life is good but it will be even better tomorrow.

North Korea's Internet Service Is Out

North Korea's internet service is out.  I know who to laugh at but I'm not sure who to applaud.

Well done!

Anarchy

I sat here feeling nervous yesterday in this country I fear might be turning to anarchy.  There has been ongoing civil dispute with crowds of people lining the streets and marching against their police forces.  That the protests have gone on so long since the police killings that spurred them to begin with means that the people have reached  their limit with corrupt police activity...but only a few are corrupt and the whole nation is holding all of them responsible.

A known criminal gunned down 2 police officers in New York who were just sitting in their car.  They were murdered because they were police officers.  Another criminal here in Florida just shot and killed another police officer for the same reason.  The normal public doesn't seem to understand that criminals don't need much motivation to kill a cop. A cop's life is on the line every day they go to work but still he/she steps out there every single day to keep you and me safe from the bad guys. Just think how safe we'd be if just a fraction of those cops decided their jobs weren't worth the crap they have to take and the dangers they face.

A police officer is just a human being who can't do their job efficiently if they have to butt heads against the bad guys AND the good guys.  We turn our backs on the "good" police officers at our peril.  We need them much more than they need us.

North Korea Bullying the World??

When I first heard that Sony was bowing to threats by North Korea and not releasing a comedy movie that insulted North Korea's leader, I thought it was a joke.  How could that little twit and his puny little country carry that much authority??

Now, Sony is a private company which, while threatened, has the right to defend itself and follow whichever course it chooses.  It has unfortunately made a choice that will probably change the world as we know it.

Millions have rejected movie content over the years but apparently we didn't do the right thing to stop them.  We should have threatened to bomb every theatre that showed the offensive movie.  But rational, intelligent people don't react that way.  North Korea's little tyrant of a leader does and we shouldn't be surprised he's done this.  The surprise comes from the fact that he's gotten his way.

If North Korea caused any terrorist activity in the U.S., I'm assuming their country would be invaded by American troops the next day and they wouldn't be invading alone.  Doesn't North Korea understand that they've stepped on the wrong toes?  Don't they understand they're nothing but a peanut about to be absorbed by a giant ape?

Everyone takes terrorists threats seriously now even if they're worded immaturely as North Korea's were.  They're almost laughable...but terrorist threats cannot be ignored.

Take care, little Kim Jong-un.  You're soon to be punished for your temper tantrum.

I'm Squawking Again

My soon to be nurse practitioner, Shelley, told me that the antibiotic prescribed to me by the doctor yesterday probably won't do a thing for my bronchitis but I'm going to take it anyway for whatever else might be lurking behind the bronchitis.  Walmart ran out of the medicine yesterday and promised it for today at 1 P.M.  It isn't there but might arrive by 4 P.M.  Hmmm!  It's a good thing I probably don't even need it, isn't it?

Apparently I'm contagious for a while yet so I'm not fit to be around anyone.  I hate being stuck in like this but I don't want to kill anyone, either, so I'll be good.

Juan had his kidney removed yesterday and is recovering fine.  It's such an awful worry for the family but it's life and we have to deal with what happens to us.  They are an extremely close and loving family and that will help with his healing for sure.

For me, I'm feeling stronger but still like I have a head cold.  I guess getting my strength back is a good sign.  I'm not coughing as much but have a real coughing jag first thing in the morning.  My next door neighbor has been coughing a lot, too, so our two trailers must be filled with germs.

In any case, the sun is shining and the air is warm and I'm happy as pig in poo to be in Florida!

It's Bronchitis

Feeling pretty crumby, I decided to call my out-of-country health insurance company to ask which clinic I should go to.  They sent me to Ridge Medical Center, a place I knew how to find.  They suggested I call first even though it was a walk-in clinic but, when I did, no-one answered.  So, off I went for a 15 minute drive where I took a few wrong turns but finally found the place.  Yes, it was walk-in but, no, you needed an appointment. Hmmm!  And so I drove back home to do a few things before my appointment at 2 P.M., arrived to find no doctor there yet and one person in front of me.  She was the same person waiting in the lobby when I left before 1 P.M.  Hmmm!

I yakked comfortably with the very friendly nurses or assistants who kept promising me the doctor would be there in about 10 minutes.  I actually got to see him over an hour after my appointment time.  He also was friendly, checked me out for about 30 seconds and told me I had bronchitis and gave me a prescription for an antibiotic.  I paid the fee of $125 which will be returned to me by my out-of-country health insurance provider.

Then, still feeling like dishwater, I went to Walmart to fill the prescription.  I waited in line for about 10 minutes only to find that they were all out of my antibiotic (a lot of people have needed it lately) and will have to go back after 1 P.M. tomorrow when it SHOULD be in.  Hmmm!

And they insult our inefficient health system in Canada!

I've never waited beyond 10 minutes for a scheduled appointment with my doctor at home and the pharmacies have never been unable to fill my prescriptions.  I guess we don't have it so bad after all.

A Bit Better

I woke up this morning feeling slightly better but this darned cold is hanging on longer than it should.  I'd decided to go to a clinic and maybe get an antibiotic but changed my mind considering the slight improvement.  I had a shower and that raised my spirits, too.  The cough isn't bad and my throat feels much better .

Then I tried to get on the internet and couldn't!  I have no patience today to deal with this crap...why is the internet in Florida so spastic??  I called Verizon and got a lovely lady from India with a strong accent but soooo polite that I suffered through it until she had my internet up and running.  Isn't it amazing to have internet trouble in Florida and have it fixed by a lady in India?

I don't feel perfect but I do think I feel well enough to go grocery shopping so I just might do that today.  We'll see.  I've been stuck in the trailer for a few days and getting a little antsy!

Trying to Make Sense

I don't understand any terrorist group that commits atrocities to make their point.  People who can torture and murder indiscriminately are enigmas to me.  A terrorist group that can force their way into a grade school and open fire on innocent children, taking the lives of somewhere around 140, can't be human.  How can a human being harm a helpless child?  But they do, and most are not even considered terrorists.

I'm very afraid of how so many human beings have become vicious predators who are capable of popping up anywhere in our civilized world and creating tragedy after tragedy without end.  There doesn't seem to be any strong deterrent for them.  A few are killed by police while performing their vicious acts but too many are hidden away, probably in plain sight if we only knew who they were.

Child molesters are given token jail time and then protected from other prisoners who might harm them.  I believe in retribution.  If some bastard touches a child, they should be whipped in public before spending life in prison and then maybe some of these perverts would think twice before acting out on their perversions.

For the terrorists who murdered all of those innocent children and teachers in Pakistan...you are the epitome of evil and I can only hope you receive your fit punishment.

Unfair!

Life is often so darned unfair and there's not a single thing we can do about it.  My Florida winter was delayed but I finally got down here but I've been sick ever since.  This cold seems to let up during the day sometimes but then, bang, it's back again just as severe.

We're used to getting a cold, tolerating it for a few days, and then gradually feeling better until it's just a bitter memory but this one won't go away.  I had the strangest thought the other day...what if one day we get a cold that just hangs on forever??  That's what this one feels like.

Shelley picked up her new puppy, Winnie, this morning and brought her over for me to see and it was love at first sight.  How could it not be??
Winnie is a maltipoo and the cutest little dog I've ever seen.  She's very calm and the cuddliest puppy in the world.

Shelley also brought me a decongestant nasal spray so we'll see if that helps at all.  I've decided that I'll go to a clinic on Monday if I'm not better.  There's so much going on this week that I'll miss, too, if I can't shake this bloody cold.

I haven't cut the grass/weeds outside and I need to plant a few flowers.  Many of last year's survived but no blooms yet.  The only good thing that's happened from this miserable cold is that it took my appetite away and I'm now at a 25 lb. loss from this time last year.  It probably won't last once I start eating normal again, though.  But I have my buddy, Sylvia, here to help me shed some more throughout the winter!

I'm bored.  I'm not used to being bored but I'm stuck in this little trailer until I get better.  Damn!

Made it to Florida

The trip down to Florida was quite nice with no bad weather to deal with.  Cindy and I paid $75 for our first night's motel and $85 for Sunday's hotel but it was a deal.  I don't usually stay in the Hampton Inns because I think they're too expensive for me but we decided to splurge since it was right next to the Cracker Barrel where we planned to eat dinner.  The bonus turned out to be that the Hampton Inn holds a happy hour between 5 & 7 where FREE snackies and wine is served to their guests.  Whoopie!!

We also used only $103 in gas to travel from home to Tampa!  It hasn't been that cheap in years but the lower cost of gas was countered by our dropping Canadian dollar against the American dollar.

One sad note.  We passed the aftermath of a horrible accident involving a little Ford Focus and a transport truck.  The car was so mangled that it was impossible to tell if it was a car so I have to believe the person driving it must still be inside and dead.  Cindy read about the accident on the internet and the driver had been just a young man who apparently ran into the back of one transport truck and then was run over by another.  We saw what turned out to be the second transport tuck buried head first into the side of a hill but that driver had survived.  Death on the highway can be swift and vicious.

We arrived at Shelley's just in time for John to whisk us away to meet Shelley for lunch.  Both Shelley and John have been dieting together and each has lost over 30 lbs.  They look terrific.  By the way, Cindy has lost 40 lbs. and is more beautiful than ever.  These are people on a mission!  With my measly little 20 lb. loss, we'd shed 120 lbs....the weight of another person!

I headed over to the park on Tuesday feeling a little under the weather and have been battling laryngitis and a head cold ever since.  Cindy came to stay with me on Thursday and I forced myself to go shopping on Friday (not really) and then Sylvia and I drove her to the airport for home on Saturday.  She'd had an unseasonably cold week in Florida but the temps started to rise today.  So unfair.

I had to buy a new printer because the old one wasn't compatible with my new computer.  Cindy tried to download something or other so I could still use the old printer but it wouldn't work so I thought, what the hell, buy a new one and get it over with.  I slept off most of yesterday and today trying to heal myself and I guess it's working because I was able to think well enough to install the new printer ($35, so pretty cheap).

I'm so hoping to feel well enough to start socializing without feeling like I'm a germ factory out to kill off old people in the park.  Tomorrow is gambling day and my goal is to be well enough to make it.

After all is said and done, I'm very happy to have made it to my little Florida trailer for another winter of fun.  I'm a very lucky old gal.

Bandages Off

I took the bandages off this morning to have a look at my dermatologist's handiwork.  It is amazing to have had 7 stitches put in your face and to not have a huge scar showing even at this early date.  She's good!

Other than a little scabbing (which I bet came from so much movement from eating and talking) there is only a tiny, almost invisible scar which could easily be concealed with make-up if I chose.  I don't.

I fervently wish this is the end of any skin cancers but it's good to know that, so far, none of them have been the dreaded melanoma and have been fairly easily dealt with.  I'm tired of having to put my normal life on hold to have them dealt with, though.

I packed the heaviest boxes in the car yesterday and will pack the lighter ones today.  All that leaves for Kim to help me with is the big suitcase which is full of everything but clothes.  There is a lot of stuff in the car that I plan to sell on Ebay but I'm still amazed at how full it is every year when I travel to Florida and back.  It seems I might be trying to do too much but every year I say it won't happen again and then it does.

I cleaned the apartment this morning and will clean the fridge tomorrow and do laundry.  I like to come home to a clean apartment so Lisette and Nicole had better be neat while they're here at Xmas.

Cindy called about making motel reservations but I don't like to do that.  It's better to decide where to stay as the time gets closer to 4:30 P.M. when I have to get off the road.  I also recommend Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Red Roof as good choices.  It's going to be fun travelling with Cindy.  She can't drive because of her carpal tunnel surgery but I never mind driving the whole way myself.

It's hard to believe that we'll be toasting our little selves in Florida this time next week!

Passed

I went to the dermatologist today to have the stitches out and to hear the results of the biopsy.  As is my way, I'd already decided how I would react to the different scenarios I might face and knew I would handle anything she threw at me.  She said that, despite there still being some cancer cells on the perimeter of the incisions, I was free to go to Florida for the winter and see her when I got home in April.  Most minor cancer cells remaining after incision will be disposed of by our own immune system but, should mine start to erupt again, I should come home and have them taken care of.  Of course!!

The best scenario would have been for all signs of skin cancer be gone but I'll accept this diagnosis.  I've had it before and haven't had skin cancer return to those spots.  Fingers crossed!

I wasn't going to pack anything more in the car until Kim comes to help me on Friday night but I couldn't stop myself...I took a few small but heavy boxes down to the car and still have a few more to go.  I'll probably take them down tomorrow so all Kim has to do on Friday night is go out for dinner with me.

Cindy got the okay from her doctor to go with me so I'll pick her up around 8 A.M. on Saturday morning.  I can't leave here any earlier than 7:30 because I can't drive in the dark.  I'm looking forward to a fun trip with Cindy and a relaxing winter in Florida.  It's just too damn cold here for me!!!

Pollo Tuscany at La Speghett

La Speghett is probably my favorite restaurant but I only go there once or twice a year.  If I went more often, I'd gain back my 20 lost pounds within a very few visits.  The food is delicious and always freshly made...my favorite is Pollo Tuscany!

I can remember in the near past when I could eat a whole plateful at lunch but lately have been able to restrain myself and bring a doggy bag home for dinner.  Today I realized that my tummy really has shrunk a bit because I don't think I even ate half the plateful before I had to call it quits.  The food is very rich and the smells make me moan.

Donna, Faye, and I yakked all through lunch and had a really enjoyable time.  I'm hoping to get good news tomorrow about leaving for Florida so I told them I hoped not to see them again until mid April.  They are good and old friends that I love being around so I'll miss them.  But, if I have to stay here, we can keep meeting every Tuesday as usual.  You can always make lemonade out of the lemons that sometimes fall into your life.

I'm still full from lunch but the smell of my leftovers as I took the photo still made me moan.

If We Can't Trust Bill Cosby...

If we can't trust Bill Cosby, who can we trust?  I've loved him for what I believed was a funny and trustworthy man for as long as I can remember and it actually hurts to see him in this new light as a rapist.  There have been so many women who have come forth with their similar stories of how he drugged and raped them that we can't close our minds to the truth.  He's a despicable human being.  He isn't the man he portrays to us in his stage and T.V. shows.  Behind the mask is a man who should be in jail.

We often hear of serial killers, pedophiles, and wife beaters as being good neighbors, sons, and relatives.  Their families and neighbors saw only one side of what, underneath, was a monster.  We can all be fooled by people like this because they know when and how to show their evil side and when to put on a decent exterior.  It's so frightening to realize none of us really know another person.

My disappointment in Bill Cosby is immense.  My sympathy is first to the women he raped and then to the poor, troubled man he turned out to be.  What a waste of an otherwise brilliant human being.

Early Christmas

By this time of the year I'm usually in Florida and never get to see Nolan and Nash opening presents.  I'm still hoping to be in Florida for Christmas but today I'm giving the babies their presents a little early.  I bought them some large Tonka trucks which will probably last throughout their childhood and I get to see their happy little faces when they unwrap their presents.

I usually go in with Kim for the boys' presents but I've had this yearning to buy them Tonka trucks and that's just what I did this year.  It's not much fun buying presents for adults but it's always so much fun to buy for little ones.  I joked with Nolan that his present from me would be really fancy toilet paper and I wish I'd had a camera handy to take a picture of the look of disgust and disappointment on his face.  He looked so miserable that I had to tell him I was only kidding and that he was getting really nice presents.  Nash is so easy going that he probably would have appreciated pretty toilet paper, though.

I'm dropping off Lisa's afghan at her parents' house on my way to Nick's so I'm kind of like a little old lady Santa today.  I'm trying to get up the nerve to knock on Isabel's door for a quick hello and a hug but I don't want to disturb her if she isn't up for visitors.  A hello and a hug shouldn't be a problem, though, but I'll make up my mind when I get to Lisa's parents' house.

I had a hard time sleeping last night because I couldn't get rid of the feeling that my biopsy report on Wednesday won't be good.  I'd thought I was past worrying but it's back.  I've kind of decided that if more surgery is needed I might just opt for radiation treatment on the area instead.  It's a decision that doesn't come easily and I'm not sure yet.

I don't like not knowing.

Helping or Hurting

It's hard to believe that any husband (or wife) would deliberately sabotage their mate's endeavor to lose weight and become healthier but it does happen.  I watched a T.V. show where the 600 lb. wife knew she had to lose weight or die and her husband was a complete jackass, insulting her and shoving food in front of her.  That's abuse.  We could say she should leave him but she loves him and will put up with it.

I have been on many diets during my middle and later years having put on a lot of weight due to my time of depression.  Anyone who is overweight is an unhappy soul who eats to relieve the unhappiness.  Gaining weight from overeating creates an even deeper depression so it's a no-win situation.

It took me years to recognize that, every time I went on a diet, my husband would bring home a dozen donuts.  I wondered why a man who could eat only a half a donut and walk away would buy so many but I didn't recognize it as sabotage for a long while.  Now, understand that he NEVER brought home a box of donuts at any other time.  I could resist those damn donuts for a couple of days and then my lack of will power would drive me to the donuts and end my diet.

One day, on a brand new diet, my husband brought home another box of donuts and a light went off in my head.  I told him I was finally on to his strategy.  He said nothing but that was the last time he tried to sabotage my diet with donuts.

I've always wondered why he would do such a thing and have a few ideas.  The one that makes the most sense is that he felt safer with a pudgy wife than with a slim one.  I can only hope that he operated unconsciously and didn't do it deliberately.  I'll never know.

These days, I have nothing but support and praise from my family and friends when I do well on a diet.  It helps so much to overcome excessive and unhealthy eating when no-one is working against you instead of with you.  We dieters need all the support we can get because most of us just aren't strong enough on our own to do it all ourselves.

My weight loss for 12 months of healthier eating is 20 lbs.  Maybe not a lot but it's a big step in the right direction.

Make-up Mirror

I buy so many little doodads at yard sales for very low prices (usually 25 cents-$1) that I'm thoroughly shocked when I have to pay full price for something.  The make-up mirror I bought years ago at a yard sale for $1 finally bit the dust and I really need one, mainly for plucking hairs, so I went shopping.  I needed a lighted one and couldn't find one at Walmart so I tried Sears.  The only one they had was a single round mirror on a pedestal for $100 and that's not in my price range so I headed up the hill to try a few stores there.  As I headed toward Target I remembered I needed an oil change so I pulled into a Nissan dealership to see if they could do it right away for me.  Not only could they do it immediately, they had a special price of $29.99 so I really lucked out.  They also sold me an air filter for $38 so they lucked out, too.

Finally deciding I'd shopped enough for the day, I drove along to "Five Guys" for my hit of fries and, lo and behold, there was a "Bed, Bath, and Beyond" in that plaza so I ate my fries and drove across to it hoping to find my mirror.  I did.  It was $50 but I'd already realized it wasn't going to come cheap so I was ready for that price.

I don't like paying full price for anything but when you need something immediately you can't be too fussy.  I rarely "need" anything so it doesn't hurt to splurge every once in a while.  The new mirror is a trifold, exactly what I wanted, and it works wonderfully so I'm happy.

Today I got my hair cut but the new hairdresser I'd just acquired and liked has quit so I had to take a chance on an unknown lady to trust with my hair.  That's always a scary proposition for any woman but she did a good job and I'll go to her again.  As long as a hairdresser understands what I want and doesn't scalp me I am satisfied.  We ladies don't ask for a lot, just what we want, right?

Police Shooting

It seems as though I'm in the minority when it comes to casting blame in the Ferguson shooting.  There are certainly gray areas but any moron should be able to figure out that, whether his arms are raised in surrender or not, he just might be shot by police if he rushes towards them.  A police officer's first responsibility is to protect himself.

Remember that the young offender was also a known criminal who had just committed a minor crime.  This was no angel who didn't understand how the police worked.  I believe he might have thought he was immune because of his age and it's a shame he had to die so young but he was the main instrument in his death.

The officer who shot him has also had his own world turned upside down.  He's now a target for those wanting revenge and I'm sure won't be able to remain living and working in Ferguson because it won't be safe for him or his family.  I do believe he shot because he felt threatened.

As for the riots and looting...how does it make sense to rob a liquor store to show you're angry about police brutality?  I also believe that most of those rioters care nothing for the young man who was killed and are using his death as an excuse to loot and destroy.

I don't think I'll live long enough to see the day the shade of one's skin won't be an issue.  But that day will come sooner or later and they'll look back on human history with wonderment about how shallow we were.

Gray Days

One of the biggest reasons I prefer Florida to Ontario in the winter is the high number of gray, dreary days we have up here in the north.  I guess I have that lack of sunlight syndrome where too many gray days get me down.

I had my shower this morning and changed the bandages.  I'm usually terribly squeamish about sores but I guess I've matured and can now take care of it without gagging.  We all have to grow up some time and I guess it's happened to me.

I took one of the clonazepam pills last night to see if they worked well enough to help me sleep if and when I get to go to Florida.  I think they helped a little too much so I won't take them again.  Tylenol PM or Advil PM work very well and don't make me sleep for as long.  Whenever I take a trip I have to take something to make me sleep because I get too excited and can't sleep.   Being tired is not a good way to start a long drive.

Cindy has the go-ahead from her boss to drive down with me but she still has to get the okay from her doctor.  I need my okay from the dermatologist and I need to make sure we have 2 clear days for driving.  I'll check the weather report every day to see if there are any changes but so far it looks good.

It will be nice to have my life back so I can at least make definite plans to do what I want.  It's a pain in the butt to be kept dangling because of indefinite circumstances.

Faye and Donna came over for Swedish weaving/knitting yesterday and we're going to use our last Tuesday (hopefully) next week to go for dinner at La Spaghett.  My diet goes out the window at that place because the food is so rich and delicious.  Good thing I just go there once or twice a year.

My plans for today were to go to the casino but my make-up mirror just died on me so maybe I'll just go shopping for a new one at Walmart.  Now, if I was in Florida, I'd be shopping with friends and then having a nice lunch with lots of laughter and good conversation.  Maybe soon.

Happy Day

I wake up happy pretty much every day and appreciate my life very much.  It won't always be this way in the future because my time here is running out, not too fast if I'm lucky.  But today is a happy day.  The skies are cloudy and the air is coldish but my computer is working, my apartment is clean, and friends are coming this afternoon for Swedish weaving.

I don't think we need very much to make us happy.  The unhappiest people seem to be those who have a lot of "stuff" but who haven't learned to appreciate what they do have, always feeling they need more.  In the end, all we really need is a loving family and/or loving friends.

When you have depression, your peripheral vision is gone and all you can see is an unhappiness you often can't trace to it's roots.  You can't see all the good things in your life and that's really sad when you think of it.  When you're greedy, you miss out on the simple pleasures that can make you happy.

I define happiness as a contentment that can soar to joy on occasion.  I'm happy to have achieved that state of mind.

Computer Cleaned and Back

I am so thrilled to have my computer back.  It's only about 10 days old and it got all messed up by downloading a bad program.  I'm not sure if I did it or it happened when Kim was trying to put in the photo gallery but it's something that could happen to anyone.  The store I bought it from fixed it for me and didn't charge me anything, either.  If it helps anyone, the store was Ancaster Computers.  Cindy had pressured me to buy from them because they're such good people and she was right!!

I'm healing well from my little surgery, feeling fantastic, and gaining hope I can get to Florida this winter.  I'm the kind of person who seldom counts on anything because I don't handle disappointment well but maybe all will work out as I'd hoped.

Sylvia calls me and we both lament how much we miss each other.  She's such a wonderful friend and so much fun to hang out with.  She said she's waiting to have flowers painted on her toes until I get down there to get mine done, too.

Matt, sweet soul that he is, came by after work to hook the computer up for me.  I couldn't get down on my knees to reach the power bar behind the desk but he just drew it closer to the front of the desk so now I don't have to bother anyone when I need to plug in or out.  I like being able to do as much as possible on my own without having to depend on others.  Matt already does way too much for me and, even though I know he doesn't mind, I don't want to bug him for little things.

It's been warm and rainy today but some fierce winds have sprung up...hope they don't bring snow!

Surgery Done

I am so happy to have the surgery over and done and hope to heaven I never need another one.  It took 7 stitches but the scar should be almost invisible when it's healed.  My dermatologist is quite the artist when it comes to stitching.  She did have to re-open the last skin cancer scar on my arm to remove a tiny piece that didn't seem to be healing properly, though.  I jokingly say I'm leaving here piece by piece but it's becoming not so funny anymore.

The pain was negligible once the freezing wore off, just as I knew it would be.  I slept like a baby last night because, easy or not, having anything cut out of your body causes trauma and stress.  I have to leave the present bandages (kind of big) on until Sunday when I can replace them with something smaller.  I'm hoping they'll be small enough not to startle passers-by so I can go out once in a while until the stitches are removed 12 days from now.

On a good note, I asked the dermatologist what the procedure would be if she hadn't been able to get all of the skin cancer out and she said she'd just go back in and remove a little more.  I asked about the Mohs surgery and was told (for the first time) that it was only done if the skin cancer was seriously deep and it has to be done in Toronto.  I then asked if I'd be able to put off a second surgery until April and she told me "probably" but we'd have to wait for the biopsy report first.  Actually, that's the best news I've heard in a long time even if it is only "probably".

On a bad note, Kim was able to put in Windows Photo Gallery for me...not as easy as last time but easy enough.  Now I'm having weird trouble and not able to get onto the internet.  I somehow was able to get the blog but don't know if it will post once I'm finished.  Do I seem to have more computer trouble than most people or is it just my imagination?

Anyway, I'm still feeling absolutely wonderful and have high hopes of getting to Florida some time this winter!

Burka Clad Males Rob Toronto Store

I knew it would happen sooner or later...criminals completely hidden under burkas and committing crimes.  It's one of the reasons burkas should be banned...not because they represent a religious order but because they hide whoever is wearing them and that can be dangerous to the public.

Women in burkas make me nervous.  I'm not quite sure if they are women and, if they are, it's such a shame that they've been brainwashed or forced to cover themselves this way.  Like all things, there is a place and time for everything and the place is not on our Canadian streets.  The time is never as far as I'm concerned.  No female should hide themselves like this.  If they insist on doing so, they should return to their country of origin where it's accepted and expected.

Now for the weather...lots of snow but not nearly as bad as poor Buffalo got hit.  Even their major highways are closed and that's got to be a record for mid November.  I was out this morning in shoes but may have to wear my brand new boots when I head over to the dermatologist's office tomorrow morning.  It's supposed to warm up by the weekend and even rain which will wash away all the snow we don't want to see yet.

I stocked up on a few groceries but will need my sweet daughters to keep me stocked up on bananas and milk over the next 2 weeks.  I might surprise myself, though, and venture out with my bandage on if it isn't too big.  We'll see.

Brief Blizzard

We've had snow flurries for the past few days but yesterday it actually turned into a brief blizzard of snow that made driving for me a little difficult.   The air is not quite cold enough to keep the snow around for long, though, but my car is the only one in the parking lot with snow on the roof.  I used my new snow brush (the old one is lost somewhere in my filled trunk) to clear about 6" of snow off the car yesterday but figured the stuff on the roof would blow away as I drove.  Apparently I didn't drive fast enough.

As surgery day comes closer, I'm becoming more stoic and accepting of whatever happens.  Of course I want to end up able to spend the rest of the winter in Florida but if I have to stay here for more surgery I can handle it.  Life seldom happens in a way we'd prefer but we simply have to deal with it in any way it does come.  I don't like the cold and the grey skies at all but I could always spend more time up at the senior center where it's a pleasant place to be.

I'm sleeping well, feeling pretty darned terrific, not worrying too much, and generally calm and contented.  Who could ask for more?

Craft Sale Fun Day

I picked Kim up a little after 8 A.M. and drove to Sackville for the craft sale.  It didn't take us long to set up because I really cut down on the amount of stuff I took to sell...a lot wasn't allowed.  My sales were almost non-existent until Matt and Kelly showed up and Kelly turned out to be an excellent sales girl.  She calls me Gramma now and that warms my heart.

Faye came about noon to drive Kim home but Kim, good soul that she is, decided to stay until the end (2 P.M.).  It was an enjoyable and easy morning talking to friendly people and making a tidy profit of $150.  I took Kim out for "lupper" at Five Guys...I know, not a good choice but we were starving.

Maybe it was because I didn't take a ton of stuff to the sale but this was one of the easiest I've attended.  Sackville is an excellent resource for our seniors and a place I'll spend a lot of time at when I'm home all winter.  There are so many activities available there and also a lovely cafeteria.  I don't know why all seniors don't take advantage of their senior centers!

I woke up this morning to a dusting of snow over the landscape and understood that it isn't the snow that gets me down but the grey skies that accompany it.  I'm aching for the Florida sunshine as much as the Florida warmth.  Maybe soon...

Flurries

It's pretty cold out so I wasn't surprised to see a few flurries as had been forecast.  Funny...I didn't mind it but I know I won't be so casual about it when the snow builds up over my ankles!

I had my last doctor's appointment today and was told my bloodwork is excellent and he doesn't need to see me for 6 months.  I accept seeing the doctor for a checkup once a year but I guess being a diabetic means I'll have to suffer through one every 6 months.  I can live with that.

I went to the Future Shop to buy a carrying case for my new laptop and was sickened by the price.  I had a really nice young salesman who was so darned helpful...he even found me the cheapest one and put a 17" laptop in it to show it would fit.  I really and truly love helpful sales people and always praise them.  There seems to be too many sales people who either don't know their products or have little interest in helping the customers so, when we get a good one, they deserve to know how much we appreciate their help.

Tomorrow is the craft show at Sackville and I'm all ready to go.  I'm picking Kim up at 8 A.M., the doors open to the public at 9:30, Faye will be there at noon to relieve Kim, and I am ever grateful to the help I get from my wonderful family!!!  I really hope I sell enough of this darned jewelry to lighten the load of my stash.  I'm not as concerned about selling all the Swedish weaving pieces because what doesn't sell I'll take to Florida and donate for door prizes.  I just enjoy making the stuff.

But now for a quiet, uneventful evening.

So Sad To Be So Computer Illiterate

I tried my darnedest today to figure out how to put "Windows Photo Gallery" on my computer so I didn't have to bug Kim to do it but managed to download something I'm not sure I want.  I guess I'll just have to impose on Kim's time again.  Sigh!

I finished Lisa's afghan and one table runner and wanted to post the photos on my Swedish weaving website but couldn't edit them...and probably couldn't have posted them, either.  I'll be so happy once I can do this all again the way it was set up on my old computer!

Yesterday I went to the casino to meet up with Mary and Don for the buffet.  They're staying at Fallsview for a couple of days.  I didn't have too much time to gamble because I had to leave by 4:30 in order to not be driving in the dark...it was still too dark halfway home, though.  The good news is that I came home $100 richer than when I got there and probably would have lost it all if I'd been able to stay later.  I never leave until I have to and that could be one of the reasons I usually go home a loser.  Yesterday was a good day!!

Young women or even middle aged women shouldn't get too talkative with strangers when they're gambling but we senior ladies are free to socialize as we see fit.  No-one is going to think we're trying to pick them up!  I gather friendly fellow gamblers when I go to the casino and we cheer each other on.  I love to gamble but I know enough not to lose too much.

One week today I'll be home recovering from the surgery to remove this darned skin cancer.  It will be another 2 weeks before the stitches are removed and I find out if further surgery will be needed.  If all goes well, I can leave for Florida by the December 6/7 weekend...and possibly with Cindy.  She's having carpal tunnel surgery on Dec. 5th and won't be able to drive for work for 10 days so she's thinking of driving down with me.  I'm really happy but worried a little bit about how the weather will affect when we could leave.  I can afford to wait a few days for good weather but Cindy can't.  I hope everything works out perfectly for both of us!

New Laptop!!

Anyone who reads my blog knows how much I hate to have to relearn anything and that's why I stuck with my old cameras for so long.  I got my new laptop on Saturday and Matt kindly set me all up on it but today is the first day I've dared use it myself...no problem, though.

Thank heavens I have a list of all my passwords for various websites or I'd be lost.  I was mad as hell for about 15 minutes trying to access my google accounts until I looked at my password list and found out I'd been putting in the wrong one.  There's something to be said about using the same password for everything...I think I have about 10 or 12 for different things.

By the way, I found my new camera...in the old laptop bag.  I'm sure I looked in there but I guess not.  I really hate it when I do something so stupid.  But then I gave the old laptop and bag to Nick for the boys and just this morning remembered it might also hold the direction pamphlet for my new camera.  Now I have him searching for that.  Sigh!

The best news of all is that I am now having little or no difficulty using the new laptop and I also have a wireless keyboard to make typing more comfortable.  The speed is so much faster now that it almost thrills me, too.

I asked Matt to plug everything in so I can unplug it all myself when I leave for Florida but he couldn't do it in a way I didn't have to climb behind the desk.  Since I can't get down on my knees to do that, I'll have to rely on someone to come in and do it for me.  Thank heavens I have people who help me out when necessary.  I really don't know how seniors with no family or friends to help them can survive because we lose the ability to do some things for ourselves as we age.

I love, love, love my new laptop!!

Relearning

It hasn't been that long since I took a photo with the camera and inserted it into the blog or Facebook but it seems as though it was long enough for me to forget everything.   First..I couldn't get the camera to turn on but apparently I was pushing the wrong button!  Then I thought the photo was taken if I just touched the screen of the phone.  Then I forgot how to find it to post it on the blog.  Either my memory is failing or I need better notes than Kim gave me.  Her notes were made before she simplified it all for me.  LOL!

Anyway, the above photo is of the Swedish weaving items I'm taking to the craft show at the senior center on the 15th.  I had to use my newly learned knowledge so I took this photo for the blog.

I'm going to write new notes for myself...but, then, I bought a new laptop and I'll bet I'll need all new notes to show me how to post photos.  Sigh!

Busy Hands

A lot of my Swedish weaving is done while I listen to a T.V. program.  Yesterday I bought some bulky yarn to make a scarf and, yes, listened to T.V. as I worked.  It seems I can't watch T.V. for very long without doing some sort of handwork.  Now this could be because there aren't enough interesting programs on T.V. or that my attention span is shortening.

When I was younger I read a lot...as many as 30 books a month but I can't read for long now or I fall asleep.  Since housework and cooking hold little interest for me, I'm lucky to have discovered a few crafts I enjoy.  It scares me to think of my little apartment having no craft supplies in it's many hidden (and not so hidden) corners because I might hike on out to the casino more often than I do.  I need to keep busy but busy with something I like to do.

Tucked away in cupboards are supplies for a future craft I intend to take up some day...jewelry making.  I've also hung on to a lot of my quilting supplies because I really enjoyed quilting until I started with the Swedish weaving.  The trouble with quilting is that you have to commit to a full day of mess in your house.  And it takes many days to finish the quilt.  When I go back to quilting, it will be to make wall hangings but that is still a huge intense time commitment.  Swedish weaving takes a lot of time to do, also, but you can work for as little as five minutes and then the cleanup is simple...you can't do that with quilting or jewelry making.

On another note...there is snow in the forecast and, at first, I was a little dismayed at the thought but now I'm kind of excited to experience it.  I usually can pick and choose the days I go out but next week has 4-5 days I'll need to be out driving so I really hope we don't get too much snow.  I've been spoiled by spending 14 winters in Florida so I just might have to hone my snow driving skills again.  Not true!  I will definitely have to hone my skills!

Losing/Gaining

Wouldn't it be nice if what we wished for just happened?  And that we didn't have to do a darned thing to make it happen?

Well, I wanted to lose some weight last year and started using Sensa with Sylvia and Joann and we all lost weight.  It was nice having that support system with people I saw every day.  But, since I got home, my weight has settled on one number that has bounced up and down all summer until settling on the same number I started with.

The only good thing is that I'm still 15 lbs. lighter than last year but I want to lose a great deal more.  I don't want to give up fries to do it, though.

Anyway, I feel better for the 15 lb. loss and my clothes are comfortable.  I began taking a few vitamins this year and that probably has helped, too.  This is the only body I have to carry me to the end and I've abused it terribly...not with drugs or booze but with unhealthy foods.  It just doesn't make sense to injest anything that will do harm to your body but we all have our vices.  Fries have a death grip on my will power and it's my choice to give in to them so my failures are my fault alone.

New Computer

I haven't got it yet but I've order a 17.3" Toshiba laptop Intel i5 and can't wait to get it and experience some kind of speed once again.  The laptop I'm using now is about 5 years old and has been acting up terribly (not so bad today, don't you know it) so, since I can't live without a computer in my life, I'm getting a new one.

It's so hard to get computer sales people to speak to me in a language I can even vaguely understand so Cindy went with me.  She's not a computer nerd but she's better than me and really helped bridge the dialogue between me and the poor salesman.  In any case, I have a nice new computer coming in later this week!!

Matt is going to help me set it up and transfer stuff from the old one to the new one...I think.  If not him, then the computer store will do it.  I certainly haven't a clue how to do it.

A thought just came to me that, when I was making sure to give lots of time to my grandchildren when they were young, I had no idea how useful they'd be to me when they grew up!  There's a lot to be said about strong family ties!

Because this old laptop is still usable as long as you don't expect much from it, I need to find someone who wants it.  There's a lot of personal information in anyone's computer that needs to be purged before you give it away, though.  Matt to the rescue again, I guess!

Oh yes...Kim, Matt, Kelly, and I saw "Sir Vincent" yesterday and loved the movie.  I'd give it 3 out of 4 stars.  It's never going to be a classic film but it sure was entertaining.

Need a New Computer

This little laptop I'm using can't be more than 5 years old but it's been acting up something terrible so I'm going computer shopping tomorrow with Kim.  She says she doesn't know much about computers but she (and everyone else) must know more than I do.

I think it's terrible that something you pay $500 for will only last 5 years!  It's probably built in obsolescence (haven't a clue if that's spelled correctly) so that we buyers keep the market going and that is a darned shame, especially since we can't do without a computer once we start using them.

I've been convinced to only buy a good laptop instead of a destop for home and a laptop for travelling.  I hate typing on a laptop but I learned that I can get a wireless keyboard to use with it so I'm good to go!

Using a computer has become a necessity in my life for many reasons...e-mails to keep up with friends and distant family, research, E-bay, blogging, etc. and I'd hate to lose all that so I'm committed to always having one.  I guess $100 or so a year isn't bad for all the pleasure it brings me.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes me to use a new one, though.  I still haven't figured out how to save websites with this one.  I'm so ashamed!

Something to Think About

When was the last time we heard that someone who set out to shoot and kill innocent people had "just converted to catholicism"??  When did we hear that a murderous terrorist had "just become a protestant...or a jew"??  Why do we always hear that a terrorist who had decided to gun down as many innocent people as possible has "recently converted to Islam"?

What kind of religion is one that promotes hatred for all who don't follow their particular creed?  What kind of religion produces followers who believe it's right to murder innocent people just because they have a different faith?  What kind of religion instills the belief in their men that they have the right to murder a daughter who doesn't bend to their will?

There is evil in all religions but Islam is in a class all it's own.  A muslim once told my husband that lying to a non-muslim was perfectly okay.  Is this how they all are taught?  If it is, it is one scary religion to have invaded our peaceful country.

Terrorists in Canada

Terrorists aren't normal people so there's no real logic to their drive to destroy.  We average people can never understand their mania.  I wasn't so much shocked as I was dismayed by seeing a terrorist murder an unsuspecting soldier (he was shot in the back!) and then racing into our parliament buildings intending to create some sort of havoc.  I'm thankful he was shot and killed before he could do more harm.

I assumed he was part of the Islamic religion because that's who is causing so much trouble in this world at the moment...and he was.  The sad thing is that he was born in Canada and only turned to Islam recently.  What a frightening religion it can be to us who don't really understand what it stands for!  I've been warned not to believe the worst in this religion but all I've read on the internet about it is that they believe anyone who doesn't practice their religion is worthless.  They call themselves a peaceful religion but how can that be if they can't be trusted to have respect for those with differing beliefs?

I'm left feeling threatened by an insidious invasion into my formerly peaceful country and worrying about the future for my children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren.

Odds and Ends

This is a Swedish weaving afghan I just finished.  Today was one of those cloudy, blah days that you can use to complete a few projects so that's what I did.  Too bad the cloudy skies caused my photo color to be blah, too.  I've got a lot of time to fill in before I go (if I can go) to Florida so I'm using it to make Swedish weaving table runners.  The next afghan I make will be for Lisa but I'll wait until I can buy the yarn in the States.  It's double the price in Canada.

I'm going to take this afghan and the table runners to the craft sale at the senior center next month.  You could never get enough money to pay for the time it takes to make these but at least it could pay for the materials.  I'll be selling some of my jewelry also...the stuff I bought to sell and then ran out of venues to sell them in!

All of this is a hobby for me, thank heavens, or I'd starve.  I enjoy Swedish weaving very much but, as far as the jewelry goes, I'd like to be rid of it.  I've got lots of jewelry pieces to make my own to sell and that's what I'd like to be doing...but not until what I have is gone!

I wonder if any of my descendents will take after me.  I'm very much like my grandmother who was a bootlegger.  She was also a great cook but that wasn't passed down to me.  I have a tendency to go into interests whole hog from the beginning and then realize my mistake once I become bored with it.  It could be worse, though.  At least I keep busy and am productive most of the time.

About my grandmother...she loved company and loved to laugh.  She was very generous and gave away much of the fruit and vegetables she spent time and energy canning for the winter.  She dyed her hair orange (I've never dyed mine) and lied about her age (I am honest about mine).  She loved me and raised me even though I was stubborn as hell.  I miss her.

I think about Nan a lot, realizing with each year what a good woman she was and how I never appreciated her until I was older.  Live and learn, right?

Kindness

I've been thinking a lot lately about my sister-in-law, Joyce.  After I met my husband, Joyce was the first of his family members to really welcome me into the family and she's been very special to me ever since.  I remember her trying to explain how this huge family was connected and failing miserably to understand.  My own family was small and not close but Joyce's family was everything that mine was not.  I guess what impressed me the most about Joyce was how kind she was to me, accepting me not as a 15 year old transient in her family but as someone she cared about.

Joyce was, and still is, a beauty.  She'd had a tough time before bringing her two children here but I admired the strength and determination in her from the very beginning.  The rest of the family were nice to me but it was Joyce who delved a little deeper and made me feel a part of them.

I don't think we ever forget kindnesses.  They warm us for a long time and even in distant memory.  Joyce calls herself my "big sister" and it warms my heart every time.  I was so lucky to marry into such a wonderful family but Joyce will always hold a special place because of her kindness to me all those years ago.

Still at Home

Today was the day I was supposed to leave for Florida but needing a skin cancer removed has kept me home indefinitely.  The earliest appointment I could get was Nov. 20th and then stitches removal on Dec. 3rd but I could have to stay longer if further surgery is indicated.  My skin cancer is called squamous and it's not the deadly melanoma so I should be thankful for that.  I am.

Life does not always move on with graceful and anticipated motion.  Sometimes the blips keep you from your planned schedules so you just have to deal with it.  What I'm missing most is the time spent at the trailer park with friends but any kind of cancer is not to be ignored or put on hold.  You have to deal with it as soon as possible.  Blips may be annoying but they're not tragedy.

One of my dilemmas right now is wondering if I should go out and buy a pair of winter boots.  I have an old pair I haven't worn in 14 years and I'm afraid they might be filled with dust so maybe it is time to buy new ones.  I also need to buy a snow scraper for the car because the one I have is buried somewhere in the trunk with all the stuff I was taking to Florida.  Problems, problems...not so terrible when you put them in perspective.

Family, In-laws, and Dogs

Cindy worked her butt off preparing for yesterday's feast and the weather co-operated by being perfect for having it out on the deck.  I wore my winter jacket just in case but didn't need to wear it.  The only downside was that some of the food wasn't hot enough but being able to eat outside made up for it.  The choices were outstanding and I couldn't accommodate them all on my plate.  Desserts were all home-made, too.  My girl can sure cook!

Cindy and Don's backyard is gorgeous with full grown trees and lots of room.  The 3 little kids and 5 dogs had a ball.  Molly, Cindy's littlest dog wanted no part of it, though, and escaped the turmoil by sitting on anyone's lap that was available.  It was a rousing time but with no mishaps to mar it as the children and dogs raced about having the time of their lives.  Our bunch, except Florida Shelley's, were all there and Don's children and grandson, too.  It's always nice to blend family get-togethers so we can all get to know each other better.

Cindy sent us all home with left-overs for today's meal, too, and I'm looking forward to another turkey dinner.  I'll miss out on the American Thanksgiving this year so this will be a welcome meal for me.  I love turkey!

I remember putting on these huge dinners when I was younger and how much work it was.  It really was exhausting but so worthwhile that you never regretted the work.  Having family or friends enjoying a meal together is one of the nicest times of life.

Today Nick and Steve are planning their annual golf game but we're expecting rain...I hope it holds off until noon when they're finished.  Nick and Steve are childhood friends.  Isn't it wonderful when friendships last forever?

And for me, today will be a day of rest and doing as little as possible.  Rainy days lower my spirit and don't prompt me to catch up on any jobs that need doing.  That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Thanksgiving 2014

There are always lots of things to be thankful for but, in all my 74 years, I've never found anything more important than family and friends.  If you don't have a loving relationship with someone then you really don't have much.

I'm having Thanksgiving dinner at Cindy's today and she's expecting 20 family members of her's and Don's.  I can't imagine celebrating Thanksgiving in a nicer way.  If all goes well, we'll eat out on the deck.  It's going to be a beautifully sunny day but a little chilly so we'll have to dress warmly.  My contribution is roles and butter...no one expects me to cook and I like it that way.

There will be a few children to lighten the day, too, along with some dogs.  I'm not saying adults aren't fun but children and dogs are even more so!

This Thanksgiving I'll be with most of the people who give my life meaning.

Elvis Mouse

I don't know if I've put this little guy on the blog before.  Mary gave him to me a couple of years ago and it just tickles me every time I press his little hand and he sings "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" by Elvis Presley.  It seems like it's usually the little joys in life that stay with us the longest.

Beautiful Day

Autumn in Ontario can be the most beautiful time of the year and today is a case in point.  The sun is shining brightly, there is very little wind, and the temperature is cool but comfortable.  I cleared the tables and chairs from the balcony and brought them inside.  Living in an apartment limits my space but I can put them in my storage unit in the basement for the winter...not today because I've done enough.

Cindy is planning on having her Thanksgiving dinner this Sunday outside on the deck and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather stays nice.  One thing about autumn is that we can get cold blasts of air right on the heels of perfect weather.

I picked up my new prescription for anxiety but haven't used it yet.  I feel fine now that I know that Mohs surgery isn't the horror I'd thought.  I could never be a drug addict because I really hate taking medication, even vitamins and supplements.  Right now I take Metformin for diabetes, a statin drug for cholesterol, Imipramine for anxiety, CoQ10, Vitamin E, and a multi vitamin.  I'm thinking of dropping the CoQ10 and won't need the Imipramine after the skin cancer surgery is over.  It irks me every time I take my little stash of pills!

On the plus side, I'm going to enjoy this perfect fall day and be thankful I'm able to do so.
