My nephew and his lady got married yesterday and it turned out to be the most perfect June day they could have chosen. It was an outdoor wedding at their farm so they were taking a big chance on the weather but mother nature provided us with sunny skies and warm breezes.
It was also a picture perfect wedding day with literally a few hundred friends and relatives who had brought dozens of happy, well behaved children who scampered everywhere. There was so much room for them to run freely and the older children lovingly tended to the younger ones which gave the parents time to mingle and chat.
We have a close knit family where the cousins of my children are friends and their children have become friends. It makes for fun family gatherings and this was no exception. My girls and their cousins enjoyed the day so much that they are now planning a cousins weekend in August. I wish all families could get along this well.
My nephew and his wife live in a huge old farmhouse that was built in 1860 and they haven't done much renovation so the old bones of the house are still very apparent. I love to meander through an old house like this and try to imagine the lives that have lived there. My nephew said there is a spot outside where all the owners of the house have carved their names, giving written history of the families which called it home.
The old, wide plank floorboards and solid wood wainscoting are beautiful. I wonder how old the wood is if the house itself was built in 1860? What did our world look like when those trees were cut down to build and decorate that house? How hard did the farmers work to till the soil and plant their crops?
This is a happy home and the loving couple surrounded by their children, family, and friends added another chapter yesterday. The evening ended with a fireworks display where we all got to "ooh" and "ahh" for a while before heading home. It was a perfect June day right to the end.
